FAMILIARS
Lighthouse Arts, Brighton. 7th-20th September 2015, 11am-5pm.
FAMILIARS is an immersive installation that materialises the presence, function, and fragility of the unseen logistical infrastructures which underpin the modern world, yet are often coded as separate to society.
Exploiting Brighton's presence and location in this infrastructure, the piece creates a mappable representation by directly intercepting logistical signals broadcast locally by air, sea, and train cargo transport and transmuting the raw data into ambisonics and projected visualisations. These facets invite exploration by the audience, creating intimacy and familiarity with a system that is designed to be invisible, and only noticed when it malfunctions or fails.
FAMILIARS is a collaboration between sound artist Wesley Goatley and technology anthropologist Georgina Voss. The work expands on their individual interdisciplinary practices around critical examinations of technology, culture, and society, and draws on their collective emphasis on public understanding and engagement with socio-technical systems.
As part of the exhibition Wesley and Georgina will be hosting UNFAMILIAR MATTER on September 12th, an evening of talks and films about the politics, power, visibility, and familiarity of infrastructures and systems.
